Important Update: Evolving Our Swim Team for the Community
Hello BWBC Members and Barracuda Families,
We are writing to share an important update regarding our Barracudas swim team: for the upcoming 2026 swim season, our community swim program is evolving to better serve all our children. This evolution is designed to ensure that every child in our community has the opportunity to swim in a safe, productive, and enjoyable environment, and to deliver a higher-quality experience for everyone.
This decision was not taken lightly, and it aims to ensure all children in our community can swim in a safe, productive, and enjoyable environment. We've thoroughly explored every alternative to address the challenges of our growing team and community.
Our combined swim team from both pools has grown to an unsustainable number of swimmers. This growth, while wonderful, has led to real issues with safety, practice space, meet durations, coach-to-swimmer ratios, overcrowding at meets, and the unfortunate exclusion of interested swimmers due to capped registration. This situation has made it clear that a new approach is necessary to better serve our entire community.
Therefore, for the upcoming 2026 swim season, we will implement a long-discussed evolution of our swim team setup to meet the growing needs of our community. The previously known “Barracudas” team will continue to operate from BWBC, while Sagamore Community Club will establish its own new swim team. More specifics on Sagamore's team structure will be shared with its members by the Sagamore Board over time. This path will allow more children to swim and ensure a higher-quality experience for everyone.
To respect the history of our alumni swimmers, both the BWBC and SCC Boards have met and agreed upon a “legacy rule” for Barracuda alumni. The “legacy rule” will allow select Barracuda alumni swimmers to remain on the BWBC Barracudas team if they choose to and meet the legacy rule qualifications. The qualifications are: SCC pool members who are 11 years of age or older on May 31st, 2026, AND have at least 4 years of history swimming with the Barracudas. If one swimmer in your family meets these qualifications, siblings are also allowed to join, allowing your family to be part of one swim team. Please note that while our previous team's capacity issues prevented allowing non-pool members, each pool's swim team has always had the right to decide how they want to handle non-members.
Over the next year, we’ll work closely with both pools and the Atlanta Swim Association (ASA) for a smooth transition. During this transition, we ask for your support and understanding to ensure the ongoing success of our program and the new venture at Sagamore.
Please watch for upcoming meetings and specific communications from both pools regarding registration, team details, and how to get involved. We understand that changes can bring mixed feelings, but we are confident this new chapter will lead to a higher-quality, more inclusive, and sustainable swim team experience for all.
We look forward to your continued support.
Sincerely,
The BWBC Board and Barracuda Swim Team
